Jeffery rewarded Cutlers trust with two 1000-yard seasons in his first 3 years in the NFL, though he hasnt been able to replicate that production since, due to repeated nagging injuries he seems to suffer every year. In 2017, the Bears let Jeffery leave in free agency, and he signed with the Eagles. McLaurin again does a good job catching the ball away from his body (and away from Slay), keeping it safe. Ron Rivera's culture revolution in Washington has provided the foundation for Logan Thomas to emerge as a respectable pass catcher in this league. Watching Reagor play, I would describe him as explosive, sudden, fast, smart (good at recognizing coverages and exploiting soft spots in zones), and a good route runner. HONORABLE MENTION: Terry McLaurin, Commanders; Tee Higgins, Bengals; Garrett Wilson, Jets; Chris Olave, Saints. Jared Goffs comeback season has been a lot prettier when St. Brown has been on the field -- he averages +0.22 EPA on those dropbacks, a number that would only trail Patrick Mahomes in the category this season. After the snap, Richardson soon breaks inside on his route while Davis (a little behind him) breaks outside, allowing Richardson to incidentally block the DB mirroring Davis and let Davis run free up the sideline for a huge gain. In this section, well offer a look at a few of the top players in the division, with an analysis of their styles, skills and limitations written by Andrew York, who has volunteered to help me with this series. The Allen-Diggs connection leads all QB-receiver duos with +61.0 expected points added this season, helping the Bills surge to the top spot in the AFC entering Week 15 and giving both players plenty to be thankful for. NFL+ gives you the freedom to watch LIVE out-of-market preseason games, LIVE local and primetime regular season and postseason games on your phone or tablet, the best NFL programming on-demand, and MORE! Richardsons injury history served as prologue to his time in the NFL. This play also shows off his acceleration and route running. His time with the Raiders was productive, but wildly inconsistent. Andrew is a self-taught film analyst with a pretty impressive resume. Good luck. [2:32] Jeffery lines up outside with the CB giving him lots of cushion. This was a 37 yard play. Tate is a good route runner, an extremely reliable catcher (2nd fewest drops among WRs in 2018), and most importantly is one of the NFLs best WRs at getting yards after catch (YAC). The suddenness with which Cooper changed his direction and the degree to which the CB committed deep make it impossible for the CB to redirect in time, and Cooper gets open for an easy catch. Hes a high effort blocker, but his technique and power are below average. Jose Joaquin (JJ) Arcega-Whiteside was born in Spain, the child of two professional basketball players. An argument can be made he is the third best receiver in the NFC East. And then to grab Brown in the third round might end up being a steal. Jefferson caught 128 passes for . Indeed, the only games where he had less than a 50% catch rate were against the Patriots and Lions, where he was shadowed by Stephon Gilmore and Darius Slay respectively. By releasing Golladay, the Giants save $6.7 million against their salary cap. Five-time Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen could be a surprise cut this offseason with the Los Angeles Chargers sitting at $19.9 million over the salary cap.It was a luxury to have both Allen and Mike Williams on the same team, but the time might have finally arrived for the Chargers to settle in with one player being the No. McLaurin runs to the DBs outside shoulder, knowing that this will give him outside leverage when he eventually breaks out on his route. The NFC East has three new head coaches and a young group of quarterbacks; its probably no surprise that it has more young and promising receivers than older established veteran receivers. Sims caught 32 passes last year and Harmon had a promising rookie season in 2019 before an ACL tear forced him to miss last year. Another WR on the same boundary runs vertically to clear out the DB there, leaving Reagor with a lot of open grass in front of him as he receives the short pass. . It looks to me like hes supposed to run a corner route, but when he finishes the route and looks back to Russell Wilson he sees him scrambling. The 6-foot-3, 229-pound Ole Miss product was one of the best wide receivers in the league against man coverage. Watching tape of Tate really reinforced what a YAC monster he is. Brown -- who is also the NFL's leader with 2,299 yards on in-breaking routes since being drafted in 2019 -- is among the biggest factors in Philly becoming the NFLs first team to clinch a playoff spot this season. That is a difficult habit to unlearn at this point in his development, though I saw enough hands catches to think he can develop. He primarily uses a combination of route running, short-area quickness, and savvy (with fakes/misdirection and ability to find the soft spot in zones) to get open and make plays. Wayne announced that he will return to the Colts as their wide receivers coach for the 2023 season on Tuesday night and head coach Shane Steichen confirmed it on Wednesday. Look how much cushion the CB opposite Reager (bottom of screen) gives him, clearly afraid of getting beat deep. Despite not getting much separation, Reagors use of inside leverage keeps him open and he does a great job highpointing the ball, bodying the CB out of the play and catching it away from him, so theres no chance for the CB to make a play on the ball. Dak breaks to his right (Coopers side) almost immediately after the snap despite little pressure and is looking for Cooper the whole time. The addition of Brown has helped Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' offense reach new heights, as Hurts has a league-high nine TD passes on go routes this season with Brown being responsible for an NFL-best five of them. I respectfully disagree with one aspect of this otherwise fine gallery Jeff Chadiha has put together of the NFL's top 10 wide receivers. McLaurin is an extremely willing and tough blocker, even if his technique could use some work, and is generally willing to do the dirty work necessary to help his team succeed. He built on that success his sophomore year in 2018, with 72 receptions for 1,061 yards. Running a sub-4.4 40 time himself, Slay isnt afraid of getting beat deep, and keeps his eyes moving between Cooper and Dak the entire time he runs with Cooper. Tate is rarely asked to block in the run game, but is a willing and physical blocker when put in that role. Non-Redskin fans could be forgiven if they were unfamiliar with Cam Sims, Trey Quinn, Terry McLaurin and Kelvin Harmon, though the latter two, taken in the 3rd & 6th rounds of Aprils draft, got a lot of good press during the pre-draft buildup this year. Golden Tate has consistently been one of the NFLs most underrated WRs. He takes off and blows past his DB to get about 6 yards of separation vertically. That speed, paired with Mike McDaniels innovative play-calling, has led to Waddles success on downfield passes, where he ranks fourth in the NFL with 741 receiving yards (trailing Hill, Davante Adams and Justin Jefferson). This home run ability forces defenses to guard the deep field against Cooper and sometimes causes CBs to give up short crossing and out routes to him because they are afraid of him running deep. 4. [5:16] Cooper lines up outside and fakes a break outside, causing Jalen Mills to bite hard on the fake, and leaving Cooper wide open when he redirects inside. However, this makes him a poor matchup on physical CBs like Josh Norman who can shove back harder. Hughes gives a generous initial cushion to prevent getting beat deep, which allows Cooper to get an easy reception for a first down and then some. Tate then stares down safety Jeff Heath and fakes inside to set him up before cutting outside, breaking another tackle attempt as he accelerates quickly to the endzone. But in todays NFL, it is better to be quick with great acceleration out of a break or a cut. Although not invited to the NFL combine, JJ had a good pro day, measuring 62 and 223 lbs, and running a 4.49s 40 yard dash. Gilmore is on top of him the whole way and cuts back just as hard as Slayton, wrapping him up as the ball gets to him and knocking the ball away. Cowboys: Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, CeeDee Lamb, Cedric Wilson, Simi Fehoko That top three of Cooper, Gallup and Lamb might be the best trio in the NFL. McLaurin keeps track of the play, and when he sees Peterson coming to his side of the field, does a great job blocking Mills out of the play. NFC East Positional overview. Despite missing four games with a hip injury, Chase still manages to be all over the receiving leaderboards this season. He was on a torrid pace yet again when healthy. This steep drop-off is no surprise, but it does influence the total number of age 30+ wide receivers who hit 100 targets in a season. 4 in the division but have several talented pass-catchers. A touch under $40 million was fully guaranteed at signing, with another $17.221 million becoming guaranteed at the start of the 2023 league year. Second, this is clearly a play designed to get the ball to Alshon Jeffery in the red zone. He is also an ace gunner on special teams and the Skins reportedly had him ranked as the number 1 ranked special teams player in the draft. [8:53] This is the danger Jeffery can present going deep. Gilmore starts close to the line and runs with Slayton, looking back to see when Slayton cuts back for a curl route. Whenever defenses left him 1-on-1 against non-elite CBs, he was able to get open for a big play, though he was often missed by inaccurate Redskins QBs early in the season. He does a great job turning on a dime to locate the ball in the air, then boxes out the deep safety Marcus Gilchrist to keep him out of the play (though Gilchrist isnt able to change direction in time anyway). That top three of Cooper, Gallup and Lamb might be the best trio in the NFL. The Next Gen Stats analytics team reveals its ranking of the 10 best edge rushers entering Week 14 of the 2022 NFL season, with the Browns' Myles Garrett leading a list of star defenders. He will put that analytical brain to work this off-season helping to analyze some of the top players in the NFC East. It's difficult to separate the top two receivers in 2022, but when taking into account career production and capability, Jefferson just barely gets the top spot. JJ has an extensive bag of tricks, using good fakes and foot quickness to get open at the release and good body positioning to make tough, contested catches. Goedert like the rest of the Eagles offense has been up and down but with rookie QB Jalen Hurts finally being ushered in as the starter expect the young QB to look for Goedert as a safety blanket when things are not going his way. Slayton was taken by the Giants in the 5th round of the 2019 NFL draft. With Dak Prescott healthy, this offense could be fun to watch. Golladay will finish his Giants career with 43 receptions for . 1 receiver. [2:38] Reagor does a good job as he approaches the CB of faking inside with his head and shoulders and planting his left leg inside, getting the CB to flip his hips inside. Unfortunately, Kupps season was cut short by injury. He makes the catch (though its a body catch, not a hands catch) and shows great strength and body control breaking the initial tackle to run for several more yards. By DJ Siddiqi. Evan Engram is the best TE. Tier 1: Elite 1. Though hes only 511, Reagors leaping ability allows him to go up pretty high to make a catch. He still doesnt have the short-area-quickness or suddenness to juke DBs out of their shoes, but he showed better ability to get open in tight spaces using fakes and body positioning. A: NAME: TEAM: COLLEGE: . Is the Jaguars' decision to make a big investment in Christian Kirk paying off so far? His routes are smooth and fluid, and once he turned on his jets near the endzone, the safety couldnt keep up. In a sport that is as physically demanding as football, one in which player injuries are common, the unit depth is as important a factor as the skill of the star players. In his rookie year in the NFL, he did an excellent job reaching out and catching the ball away from his body (hands-catching), which is critical to keep the ball safe from DBs that rarely allow as much separation as in college. As it pertains to this season specifically, Diggs has not slowed down, leading the league with 10 receiving TDs when aligned wide. Please logout and login again. Dallas Goedert was likened to Zach Ertz even before the draft. Click here to see all the Ranking the NFC East articles. This is a perfect example of why hands-catching is necessary against NFL-caliber talent, where the few inches of separation created by catching the ball arms length away is the difference between a big catch and an incompletion. However, I think Slayton has a very high ceiling and could be really good if he continues to develop. Will Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa make the Pro Bowl? Although Reagor is a deep threat, I think hes similar to Amari Cooper in that hes a bit more quick than fast; defenses have to respect his deep speed, but his suddenness in changing direction is actually more of a threat than his ability to take the top off a defense. The Next Gen Stats analytics team provides a ranking of the top 10 shutdown cornerbacks right now. The NFC East in 2020 has been described as the most atrocious division in NFL history. NFL passing games want quick-hitting routes rather than long developing ones downfield. Of the players I reviewed last year for the Ranking the NFCE series, my opinion on Cooper is that he is among the least changed. Once hes caught the ball, this play is over, as McLaurin is too fast for any Eagles defenders to catch him. Jeffery lines up on the outside in a bunch formation (3 WRs all bunched up on the same side), but at the last second moves inside as if hes moving to the slot. [1:24] Great job by McLaurin turning a simple out route into a first down with yards to spare. Paul Richardson Jr was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL draft. He shows enough effort and skill in route running that I think he will develop into a capable NFL starter under good coaching, but I think his immediate value will be on special teams, where he already has the ability to make an impact. Amari Cooper was selected 4th overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2015 draft. Despite the down year, Reagor had a pretty good Combine, measuring in at 511, 206 pounds, and running a 4.47 second 40 yard dash. This play showcases McLaurins acceleration, route running, hands-catching ability, and top-end speed. Metcalf also recorded five touchdowns on vertical routes against man coverage, tying for the most in the league. Buy Chargers Tickets. Last off-season, Hogs Haven published articles that focused on ranking position groups and head coaches in an effort to identify what the division would look like in 2018. [2:21] Cooper (bottom of screen) runs forward to act as a blocker, but whiffs on his initial attempted block and cant really get push on anyone. Opposing defenses either shadowed him with their best CB or shaded coverage in his direction to account for him. You won't want to miss a moment of the 2022 season! They bring two DBs down to bracket Slayton (bottom of screen). Dallas Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper edges out the competition to place as the NFC East's best receiver. Terry McLaurin flashes elite traits, but has enough problems in his tape that I can see why he fell to the 3rd round. NFC East . His lack of deep speed often shows up after that, as opposing CBs will close that distance fast. The team is left with newly-signed the veteran free agent, 30-year-old Golden Tate (who, for the record, I wanted the Redskins to sign in free agency this year) as the apparent top receiver on the roster. Darby is a much better (and faster) CB than Douglas and runs with McLaurin down the sideline, but Terry turns back at just the right time, quickly locates the ball in the air, tracks it, and reaches out to make a very tough contested catch. The wide receiver landscape in the NFC East has changed dramatically over the past couple of seasons. Richardson lines up outside (top of screen) with Davis lining up inside as a potential blocker (though it doesnt look like the defense buys that for a second). Cornerbacks and safeties are smart in the NFL and can read route tells extremely well. Staying close and allowing little separation early in the route also allows those DBs to keep Cooper covered when he breaks inside on a crossing or curl route. If they want to plug him into the slot, theyre getting a sure-handed guy who can move the chains. He also doesnt use deception and fakes as aggressively as he could in his routes, possibly because he is accustomed to simply running past opponents. If you look at all the players at this position that have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you might be shocked that a good percentage of them are not elite speedsters. Douglas is not the fastest of CBs and is playing a few yards off, so he cant jam McLaurin at the line to disrupt his route. SB Nation CFB. The Cowboys 2018 season turned around completely when they traded for Amari Cooper, who, playing in his 5th year option season in 2019, is in a contract year and looking to get paid going forward. We are seeing more and more taller receivers that run well in a straight line, but arent great at changing directions, fall lower and lower in the draft. If there were a vote for the most anonymous group in the division, I suspect that it would be won by the Giants, whose WR corps is headlined by Golden Tate and was not supplemented in the April draft, in which Dave Gettleman selected three offensive linemen and three linebackers, while every other team in the division drafted at least one new receiver. He never quits on plays. It is well known in the scouting community that when watching tape of college wide receiver prospects, it is imperative to analyze every snap against press man coverage. Giving him an easy pass like this and clearing his way also makes things easy on their freshman QB. Coopers ability to sell a fake will still get him open against younger DBs, which is why it really takes an experienced and fast DB playing press man to shut him down. This year, were going to look at the division again, but were gonna try to ramp things up a bit by adding some film review to some of the position group reviews. The Washington Football Team stands at 72.6 inches, or 6'1". [2:35] Richardson lines up outside (bottom of screen) behind the line of scrimmage. Although the ball is placed right on his hands, he makes an ugly drop and misses out on a big play. With very little separation, Slayton runs down the sideline on a fade route, looks back, sees the ball in the air and reaches for it, but Gilmore bats it out of his hands. In this section, well offer a look at a few of the top players in the division, with an analysis of their styles, skills and limitations written by Andrew York, who has volunteered to co-author this series with me. [7:19] Slayton lines up on the boundary top of screen opposite Stephon Gilmore. His most impressive area of improvement was in his catching ability. He also tested extremely well at the combine, achieving a 95th percentile SPARQ score. Being able to abuse coverage with slants and out routes over and over is more valuable than a receiver that can occasionally win deep downfield. [2:08] Here is another example of using excellent body-positioning to box an opponent out, but this time against a much better opponent: Julian Love (taken by the Giants in the 4th round of the 2019 draft). McLaurin is a very willing blocker in the run game and has the physicality to do it well, though his technique (body positioning and angles) need work. Andre Dillard is a clear successor to Jason Peters. He makes a perfect hands catch, reaching out and securing the ball away from his body (and away from the DB), then tucking it under his outside arm to run. Robinson is a superstar whose contributions have been overlooked. But the NFC North has four of the very best wideouts in football, including possibly the best wideout in the league in Adams. Getty The Cowboys could be the perfect landing spot for Giants WR Richie James. The Dallas Cowboys rookie taken 17th overall in the 2020 NFL draft looks like a bona fide future star and may emerge as the divisions best weapon sooner rather than later. But that couldnt have just been a fluke. Lastly, he is more physical than one might expect from an undersized WR and never gives up on a play, so he will often drag a tackler for several yards and excels at improvising after a play breaks down to get open when other players thought the play was dead. He is also a much tougher and higher-effort player than I had previously realized, able to hang on to make contested catches, and often reaching forward after contact to gain a few extra yards. The Next Gen Stats analytics team provides a ranking of the top 10 players at the position in 2022, with some names that could surprise you. Just a few years ago, the NFC East was chock-full of high profile wide receivers. The 2018 version of this article focused on players like Odell Beckham Jr., Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, Jamison Crowder, Terrance Williams, Allen Hurns, Cole Beasley, Nelson Agholor and Mike Wallace - none of whom will be discussed in this article, just two years later. This was the TD that tied Walter Paytons career rushing TD record, and Adrian Peterson gave Terry the ball after the play because he knew the TD wouldnt have been possible without his blocking. Reagor dealt with some poorly thrown balls and did an amazing job adjusting to them as shown earlier, but he also had too many easy misses and drops like the one shown here. However, when healthy, Richardson is a very capable pass catcher. Last month, the former LSU star surpassed another legendary Vikings receiver -- none other than Hall of Famer Randy Moss -- for the most receiving yards in a player's first three seasons, and he has only added to that total over the last couple weeks. His biggest problem is his drop rate, which will need to improve in the NFL if he is to become a trusted target of Carson Wentz. He really emerged after that though, acting primarily as a deep threat early in the season, but leveraging his early success to get more snaps, run a few more routes, and demand more attention from opposing defenses. He was traded to the Cowboys in the middle of last season (the 4th year of his rookie contract) for a 1st round pick in 2019 draft, and Cooper had an immediate impact, seemingly jump-starting the Cowboys offense and helping them to a division championship. AZ, CO, CT, IL, IN, IA, KS, LA, (select parishes), MD, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, TN, VA, WV, WY, CA-ONT only.Eligibility restrictions apply. Gambling problem? 3rd year tight end Dallas Goedert has emerged as the NFC East's best TE. Many make the mistake that if a wide receiver is big and fast that he immediately becomes a top NFL prospect. Hes still only an average run blocker, but thats a step up from what he was and traditionally means a lot to the Cowboys offense. See where he lands in the Next Gen Stats analytics team's ranking of the top 10 slot receivers right now. Jeffery is just a bit less gifted in each of these areas than an elite player like Julio Jones, and isnt really elite in any area. He has NFL bloodlines as his father, Paul Richardson, played several years as an NFL wide receiver as well. Instead of taking a step back, Hill has elevated an entire offense and been the key to third-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's breakout season. I still think New York should target the position, even if the team has to reach a . He has enough deep speed that opposing DBs have to respect the deep pass and will often sell out to defend it, giving Cooper a good amount of cushion. The only reason I put him below elite is that he rarely faced double teams, but was neutralized by them when he did. This play shows excellent route running ability, strength, and effort, though it would be nice if he trusted his hands enough to make the catch without using his body to corral the ball. Also, the fact that the Lions had Slay shadow McLaurin all game, even traveling with him into the slot, shows the respect they had for him. As we enter 2019, the Eagles may feature the most recognizable names with fans across the NFL with 32-year-old Desean Jackson, coming back for a second run in Philly, Alshon Jeffrey, who first built his reputation in Chicago, and Nelson Aghlor, who experienced a breakout season a year ago being joined by 2nd round pick J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. This is almost a right of passage and wide receivers must show the ability to win at the line of scrimmage and make defensive coordinators pay for playing them in this manner. But he is good in all of these areas, and is a very reliable WR - one a quarterback can throw to in almost any situation, particularly in the red zone. NFC East. Who's the Best Wide Receiver in the NFL? He often uses his quickness to get immediate separation once the ball is in the air, and uses his change-of-direction ability to juke an initial tackle attempt and turn uphill for extra yards. Once Reagor has passed the CB he shows great acceleration getting down the field quickly and showing good use of inside leverage, keeping himself between the CB and the QB so the QB has a clear path to throw to him inside. Building on his success earlier in the game, Cooper fakes another deep route down the sideline, then stutter-steps inside on a slant route. Note, however, that he didnt make the big play by simply running past everyone with deep speed, but, rather, by using his sudden acceleration and route running ability to get open, and then using his agility to break tackles until the defenders were left behind. Which game is featured at the top of NGS's unlikeliest victory rankings? At the Combine, he had posted a very good 4.42s 40-yard dash (showing good deep speed), but also produced an elite 6.71s 3-cone drill (agility), and 3.98s 20 yard shuttle (acceleration). [9:18] Tate lines up outside this time, fakes an out route, but then redirects to run deep and accelerate quickly while CB Anthony Browns head is turned to the QB, allowing him to get yards of separation and an easy catch that he turns into a TD. He doesnt do it often enough to be a big issue, but maybe because his cuts are so sharp, he seems to trip himself up and miss out on extra yards now and again. Afraid of getting beat deep, defenses have played split-safety coverages at the highest rate against the Dolphins (51 percent) and man coverage at the lowest rate (17 percent). Chicago Bears. He then changes direction uphill so suddenly that Lewis overshoots him on the tackle attempt. Slayton doesnt have much in the way of counters, tricks, or physicality to get open if his athleticism isnt enough. What would Hill's performance look like when he didn't have an out-of-this-world quarterback throwing to him? He is also still an excellent route runner, running crisp routes with a tremendous sense of timing and anticipation of the balls arrival. In his college tape, he almost always corralled balls into his body after getting several feet of separation from DBs. As a result, Slay does not get fooled when Cooper stops and turns around to catch the ball on a comeback. At the quarter mark of the 2022 NFL season, the Next Gen Stats analytics team ranks the top 10 defensive lines. Reagor is a bit more physical than you might expect from a playing weight under 200 pounds, though he still struggles a bit with press coverage. Richardson plays his role very well here, and I think it shows not just his intelligence and attention to detail in getting the timing and nuance of a play like this down right, but also his selflessness in working hard to execute a play that ultimately benefits another pass catcher.
